I am a big fan of The Ordinary and have used quite a lot of their range now but I am yet to review anything of theirs on my blog! This is a glycolic acid toner which I was expecting to rival my favourite Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Extreme Night Pads and Pixi Glow Tonic.
A product like this is used straight after cleansing, applied on a cotton pad and wiped over the face (avoiding eye area). I personally use an acid toner morning and evening after cleansing but The Ordinary have written on this bottle to use it once a day – I’m such a rebel!
I was expecting this toner to feel stronger than other glycolic acid products I have used due to the high 7% concentration, but I was surprised just how much stronger it felt! I’ve used glycolic acid products for years so thought I would have good tolerance but when using this I really did feel a burning sensation which I’ve never felt with any other glycolic product! It wasn’t very pleasant! I’ve gotten through 3/4 of this bottle now and it doesn’t feel any where near as bad anymore as I have gotten used to it, however, it’s still a bit tingly and if I’m honest I don’t particularly enjoy using it. I much prefer using a Nip+Fab pad. Having said all that though, using this hasn’t dried my skin out and has maintained a clear, relatively spot free and bright complexion – which I what I love using glycolic acid for!
The formula seems to be very bubbly which I find a bit disconcerting but I think it again just demonstrates the strength of this formula. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who has never used glycolic acid on their skin before as I think it would just be far too irritating. Maybe it could work if you built up your tolerance really gradually, like literally one evening a week and go from there.
A major positive of this product is it is fantastic value for money. You get a big 240ml bottle for £6.80 which is amazing when you compare it to Pixi Glow Tonic which is £18 for 250ml. The bottle seems to be lasting me a long time too, I think the nozzle that it comes with is very useful at minimising wastage. It took me much longer than I would care to admit to figure out how the nozzle worked… (FYI, you twist it, not pull).
I was always going to try out this product as I love acid toners so much but now I have I don’t think I would buy it again. I don’t find it pleasant to use and I don’t particularly like how it makes my skin feel afterwards, even now I’m used to the strength and it doesn’t burn. It seems to sit on your skin and feels dehydrating. It’s a shame as it’s such fantastic value and it is effective, but I get the same benefits from Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Extreme Night Pads and I actually enjoy using them.
